In September 1989, 15 residents of Lake Monticello met to discuss
the general unkempt condition of the grounds at the lake. Finding
that the funds and maintenance personnel allocated by LMOA were
limited to keeping the lawns mowed, the group decided to form a
committee to do the jobs themselves – and to provide further
plantings as necessary to beautify our community. They called
themselves the “Lake Monticello Beautification Corps,” (LMBC),
recognized by the LMOA Board.
Initially, LMBC took on the foundation plantings in front of the Club
House and the Golf Pro Shop; those in front of the brick walls at the
Main Gate and along the sides at Riverside Gate. (These had been
planted by two individuals from funds they collected from residents.)
Additionally, they added a row of dogwoods along Ashlawn
Boulevard – done by another group of residents; and a row of
azaleas along the walk as you enter the Club House, planted by a
group known as the Ladies of the Lake.
It was realized that more beautification plantings were needed, and
that money raising was necessary. The Holiday House Tour was our
first fund-raiser. Earthday, begun in 1990, was more of an
educational event, but a small profit was realized. In 2001 Earthday
was replaced by a Spring Garden Tour. The LMBC Telephone
Directory has become a major source of funds – and it supplies
needed information to Lake Monticello residents. Memorial and
donor gifts have also helped provide many plants.
From that very modest beginning, the Beautification Corps has
grown to over 50 members and has expanded its efforts all around
the lake. Over the years, the Corps has landscaped the grounds
around the Club House and Pool (including a complete re-design of
the plantings); the grounds at the Pro Shop, its entrance and some
golf tees and greens; the Main Gate island and the new Police/ECC
Building and adjacent parking lot; gardens on the corners of Bunker
and Jefferson; redesign of all Lake Monticello gates, and Tufton
Lake, currently a total of 59. To insure that the community would
have a uniform look, professional help was obtained and paid for by
LMBC. After each new planting, LMBC members undertook the
maintenance of the area. There are several work parties each month
with about 20 or so members who enjoy getting out, working
together and making the place beautiful.
The Beautification Corps has contributed much to the interior of
the Club House, including paintings, mirrors, framed posters; the
computer station for the dining room; the table and mirror in the
foyer; buffet table skirts; valances for the Pub windows; papering
and painting the downstairs hallway, upstairs ladies’ and mens’ rest
rooms; and installing the chair rail in the Faulconer Room.
LMBC holds educational seminars on various subjects related to its
purposes. The Lake Monticello Beautification Corps decorates the
Club House at Holiday time, and hosts the annual tree lighting and
carol sing.
The Lake Monticello Beautification Corps meets at the Club House
in the Terrace Room, usually at 9:30 am the first Monday of each
month. Check the Friday Flyer for exact date and time.
We have members of most any age or capability. You do not have
to get your hands dirty to help. We have lots of other opportunities.
